Lankan kung-fu national team sent back

Salem , Feb 7 A nine-member Sri Lankan kung-fu national team, which arrived here to take part in an international tournament, was sent back home last night, following objections raised by activists of the pro- LTTE Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK.)

The PDK men also burnt the Sri Lankan national flag during the opening ceremony of the tournament.

According to Salem Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Singh, 30 PDK activists, including district secretary Balu and a law student Karthivel, have been arrested under different sections of IPC for rioting and criminal intimidation.

Singh said that the PDK activists entered the area at the Salem indoor Stadium where the opening ceremony of the international kung-fu karate tournament was on, snatched the Sri Lankan national flag from the bearer and burnt it down.

Subsequently, the team, which included two Tamil sportspersons, was sent to Tiruchirappalli with police protection, from where they were flown back to Sri Lanka, he said. (PTI)
